You will need what is called "Commercial General Liability".  There are free on-line insurance quoting services that will provide you the best rates from dozens of companies. If you want coverage on your tools or equipment you will need to request that coverage as well.

You can access a list of the more popular and reliable free services at http://www.Insuranceeasy.org under the business insurance section or you can use the following direct links:

Also you will need to check with your local county government and make sure that you don't need a bond in addition to the commercial general liability insurance.  If you do they will provide you with the bond form that you will need to take to an agent that specializes in bond insurance.

Hope this helps.

God Bless!

"What does it profit a man to gain the world if he loses his soul?"

It helps.   Thanks a lot.  I have a chance to get a particular installation job financed by a government program, but they want me to be insured, and didn't say what kind of insurance they wanted me to have.  The state website only talks about workman's comp insurance and doesn't mention liability insurance.  I'm not sure what government entity is financing the job, since it is for a customer, and I am getting details second hand (since the customer already knows that my prices are lower and the quality higher than most people, and would prefer I did the job).  I don't live in Wayne County, and if getting licensed or bonded there is a necessity I will definitely pass up the work.

If this is a government job then they will want you to have:

1) Commercial General Liability

AND MOST LIKELY (Exception might be made for a subcontractor who would be covered under the general contractors bond)

2) Contractors Bond

As far as the liability insurance I am sure that the previous links that I provided you with will offer you the best premiums.

Regarding the bond you will need to know how much the bond needs to be for. The bid specs should tell you. It may require a bid bond and a completion bond. Usually these are a percentage of the overall job.

I am in Ohio but work with a insurance company that is located in Lansing, Michigan called Auto Owners. I know that they are a good company and that they provide bonds for contractors. You can go to their site at: http://www.auto-owners.com/ click the "Find An Agency" link and look for a local agent in your area.

Another good bond company is CNA Surety you can contact them at 1-800-331-6053

Again I would use the previously provided links to get the best rates for the links for the Commercial General Liability quotes: When using these links I would make a request from each of the services.  It's free, secure and ther's no obligation to buy.  You would have to literally go to 50 or 60 agents to get the same amount of quotes from different companies.

Let me know if there's anything else i can help with.
