Hi Elle, -------------- The amount of melanin in the cortex determines the hair's color. Other factors are: genes, geography, texture, density, and chemicals. Dark (Black) hair indicates large amounts of Melanin, white hair has no Melanon. Melanin has 2 types: eumelanin and phaeomelanin. Eumelaninthe is responsible or hair color from black to brown and phaeomelanin is responsible for red and yellowish hair color. Natural hair colors can be broken up into: Blonde, Brunette, Redhead and Black hair color. The texture and density of hair also affect the hair color, as it is perceived. Overall it is geography and genetics that determines Hair colour. People living in the North (who are very little exposed to sunlight) need little or no melanin and thus have light colored hair (the opposite applies to people living at the equator). Chemicals can affect the hair color: exposure to pool water (high concentration of chlorine) can tint the hair green. Iron dissolved in water can turn blond hair into brown. H2O2 makes the hair look "blond"..... --------------- Best regards,
