If you do not have a good excuse you will be charged interest on the sum owed in addition to a fine.

Depends on your income level, how late, what jurisdiction you are in.  It could mean nothing, a small or large fine, or no return, or penalties.

Discuss with your accountant.

as far as i know depending on where you live they cannot calculate your earnings and what you owe in  taxes. so if you were entitled to a tax rebate and had been paying to much tax they would not be able to pay you back what they owe you. they may need to calculate your taxes for the following year and if they dont have accurate paper work then they may over charge you. then also if they havent charged you enough tax later on they may stop your tax credits or send you a large bill or fine you with interest. that  is if you are seen to be tax evading.

You have been given the right answer by brosen. I will add what my accountant told me. If you owe, you should either file for an extension or send them in without the check. If it's on time that usually stops the penalties and interest.
