What is the most important page of a website? Home, About, Contact Us, etc
IMO what the new arriver sees as soon as the site loads on his screen
it should make the user want to browse and spend time on the site
The home page. I never take a risk with my home page. I often write on other webpages on my site, but I get my homepage written by experts. I also get it optimized so that people on search engines can find it. I use http://www.freelancewritingdesk.com for writing my homepage content.

I suggest that you think less about individual pages and more about your site as a whole. You should have a very clear goal for the website as well as strategies for how to achieve that goal. Once you know those things, every page on your site should support those strategies. If any page does NOT support those strategies, you should get rid of it. If a one-page website achieves your goals - do it; you should never feel obliged to include other pages just because everyone else does.
If you want to dig a little deeper into HOW your site presents information, I'd recommend "Don't Make Me Think: A Common Sense Approach to Web Usability " by Steve Krug. If you want to dig a little deeper into WHAT content to put on your site, I'd recommend "Content Strategy for the Web " by Kristina Halvorson.
