My wife and I share a small 2 bedroom apartment in NY State with my 12 yr. old son and 6 year old daughter. The kids share a room and would love their own room but we are unable to move at this point. Our new neighbors have told someone they are considering "calling the police" about this. We are a decent family, and the kids respect each others' privacy. Is there something illegal about our living arrangements, and should we be worried? Thanks for any help.
I don't believe there is anything illegal but you should take into account that children are curious and could be easily tempted. I met some families who were forced to live in smaller quarters and their children respected each others modesty and privacy.
Turn off the television and teach your children how to think.

I live on the opposite coast, so I am unfamiliar with the laws in your state.
In the Uk, there is a age cut off for boy & girl sharing the same bed room, I believe it is 12 years of age.
Great answers, and all right on track. A big load off our shoulders. Thanks!
There's nothing to worry about. I think your neighbors is just trying to give you a reasons to leave your apartment. They are just people who as nothing to do with themselves..
affordable platform beds
Each community has it's own real estate occupancy laws which you don't appear to be violating. If you were trying to accomodate 8 people in a 2 bedroom apt., you would likely be violating the local laws. Also, your landlord can specify the max # of occupants in your lease. As others mentioned, a real estate attorney can tell you what the local or regional occupancy laws state.
I would also consult a family law attorney about the co-habitation in the same bedroom of minors of a different gender. This is probabaly what your neighbors are complaining about. In certain states, if a person of a certain age or older shares a bedroom with another person of a certain age or younger, and they are of different gender, this is illegal and you can be arrested for child abuse.
For instance, a minor child in California is allowed to sleep in their parent's bedroom thru age of 9. After that age, the child is required to have their own bedroom, else the parent can be arrested for child abuse. Granted, this is an example of an adult/child situation, but other laws do apply to minors, especially to those of a different gender who are sharing a bedroom.
