Watch the social section of your local newspaper, or check out online websites about the city you live in. There are ALWAYS free events, such as craft fairs, art exhibits, sports exhibitions, etc. Even if they sound goofy, or like they are not your cup of tea, check it out, at the least, it might be good for a laugh. Also, many bars or coffee shops keep board games for customer's use. Pick a time that isn't normally busy, buy a soda or a beer, and enjoy the competition.
Also some bars host free trivia, some times on TV and sometimes hosted live. Again, buy a soda or an appetizer and enjoy the game. Some dance clubs offer free dance lessons, early in the evening - learn how to salsa, swing, or whatever else they offer.
If you know anyone that owns a portable GPS device you could borrow, check out geocaching. It's interesting and free, gets you outside and, allows you to explore areas you might not otherwise see.
Set up your own sampling event. Try different types of teas, coffees, beer, etc. Bake until find the PERFECT chocolate chip cookie recipe. Make a pie the old-fashioned way.
Explore the public library, browse at the thrift store, have a picnic and read to each other. Take turns playing DJ and playing your favorite music for each other. Write a story together. Play an online game. Teach him how to paint your toe-nails, learn how to give him a really great shave.
Another GREAT way to spend time with your other is to volunteer together. Find a Habitat for Humanity project, work a food bank, help out at a community clean-up. Walk dogs at the local shelter. You'll be spending time together AND helping others, a real win-win.
