Sadly , there are still a few countries where hunting elephants is legal: South Africa , Namibia , Botswana , Zimbabwe , Tanzania (see page 17 in the link ) http://www.traffic.org/content/14.pdf

Annual export quotas for live specimens and hunting trophies were granted as follows; Botswana 5, Namibia 150, and Zimbabwe 50, and it was to be for non-commercial purposes.   (http://www.american.edu/TED/elephbot.htm)

Some – Zimbabwe, South Africa, Botswana and Namibia – have retained healthy elephant populations and believe they should be allowed to export ivory. The ban remains in place but the elephant range states and CITES parties have agreed to develop monitoring programmes to determine trends in poaching and trade. http://www.wwf.org.uk/core/wildlife/fs_0000000016.asp

Here is the list of large game that it is legal to hunt in South Africa: elephant , rhino , buffalo , lion , leopard (see page 9 in the link below)

Here are beautiful photos of what you can see (without hunting!)

I was late for work this morning, because I got stuck in Zeno's paradox

In some places in Africa where wildlife preservation was instituted (e.g. in South Africa), the elephant population actually reached a stage where the herds were a danger to farms and people, so the authorities instituted culling to keep the elephant herds down to managable proportions. This is done by professionals, and is under very strict supervision. It is not like, say, duck hunting in the USA where anyone can apply for a permit and then take a rifle and go hunting.

Yes, You may hunt elephants today in Africa. A limited number of permits are available in certain areas throughout Africa. These permits come at a substantial cost. These funds help to conserve the Elephant by providing the needed funding. These funds are a vital part of the conservation effort helping to fund the patrols the areas, thus protecting the herd.
