I think you'd be better off working for yourself, but it's your call.

Hire in at a temp agency.  They accept almost anybody, and it's where and how a lot of companies find their permanent workers.  Some of these temp firms are actually reputable.

Working for yourself affords you lots of flexability as well as your your own manager. Going back into the workforce may be difficult for you unless you find a position that will allow you similar benefits. You should sit down do an assesment of your skills. Maybe start working for temp agencies, some hospitals have their own temp agencies. Companies will hire temporary people into full time positions. Be clear with the temp agencies about your goals and salary expectations. If you want full time then make sure they understand that you are  looking for full time employment.

Haven't you made any contacts during years that you worked ? If your looking to work in the same industry or area ? I would call around, many start up business's are looking for people like you with your qualifications. Just make it clear you are not interested in taking over there business. Also, local newspapers are great for self promotion. Concerning job placement < new endevors > best wishes
