Our hot water is discolored and staining our laundry. We replaced our water heater but it did not fix the problem. Would it be possible that our pipes also need to be replaced because of build up of lime and rust? Someone suggested if we installed a water softner it would clean through the pipes. What should be our next move of fixing our discoloration problem of our hot water?
Do you have city or well water ???
Are your pipes copper or galvanized (rust) ???
A water softener may help also look into a deionizer to clean the pipes

My guess would be is that the inside of your hot water tank has begin to rust, which means that it is only a matter of time before it rusts all of the way through and leaks on the floor. Basically this would mean that you need to replace the tank with a new one. That is of course if this is a new problem.
If your water has always been yellow, you may have rusty pipes under the house or just yellow water in which case you would need a filtration unit/water softener.
