Why and how does honey escapes out of tightly-closed jars? How can you prevent it?

Why does honey crawl up the jar to escape it, and how on earth can such thick liquid make its way out of the tightly closed lid where even water can't penatrate???

Moreover, does anyone have any trick to prevent this from happening?

There must be some old grandmother trick for that out there!

I have to admit I use honey in many recipes but I have never thought the honey escapes, I guess that the jar’s rim just gets covered with honey which slides on the sides.

I thought of this and I looked at my storeroom (where I keep my closed honey jars) and there is no sign of honey escaping.

All you need to do is to rub the honey on the side of the jar (it usually happens when you like to clean the spoon) and when you close the jar, just rinse it with hot water.

Oh no, I close these jars tightly, wash the outside and wipe it until it's clean-clean. I come back a week later and there is honey runing all over the oputside of the jar and onto the shelf. You can actually see where the honey climbed up and escaped. It has been happeining for as long as I can remember, regardless of the shape and material of the jar and lid.

Wisdom begins in wonder

I´ve been using honey for a while and I´ve never seen this happen. How long time doe´s it take for the honey to conduct in this manner? I bet you hafe a kid in the house who like´s the honey a lot and is´nt to careful about the jar. If not, take a video camera, place in front of the jar and see what happens. This sounds like some supernatural honey you´ve got there. I bet I´t would be interesting to watch the video of the honey crawling up the jar, dont you think?

Well, since this is happenning with different brands of honey, different bottle type and differend lid/cap types and in apartments that I've had in both CA, NY and outside the country, I don't think that this is a supernatural case with this particular honey...

It takes about 2 days to a week to happen. I just got a clue from someone in the past week... This happens much faster on hotter, dryer days. I guess this means that temperature and pressure differential has something to do with this.

This by the way, never happens with raw honey. Only with the standard pesturized type.
