Everything I say can be fully substantiated by my own opinion.

In 1540, Spanish Viceroy Antonio de Mendosa sent Francisco Vasquez de Coronado to search the Southwest U.S. for the fabled cities of Cibola.  Coronado sent some of his men, with Hopi guides, to investigate Arizona.  Those men were the first Europeans to see the Grand Canyon.  They weren't impressed.  They were looking for riches, not ravines.
