Asked about “roof damage insurance claim

Do homeowner insurance rates go up after a claim?

If I've had storm damage to my roof, and I turn it in for insurance, can my rates go up? It should be obvious to them that this is something that happened beyond my control, unlike an auto accident or something.

One Idea Alone Can Add $10,000.00 To A Claim

Maybe, it depends on the insurance company. Call your agent before you turn in the claim and ask him. Get it in writing. Some companies will not raise your rates for one or two claims, but maybe raise your deductible. Some insurers will just non-renew after a claim, and not tell you until two weeks before the policy term is up.

They don't care what the cause is, they'll raise your rates anyway, or your deductible or both. Insurance in this country is a joke. You can have it for years, but if you have to turn in a claim, especially a big one ( like a roof) they can raise your rates to new highs or drop you like a hot potato. Stay away from American Family, they do it frequently. Used to be a good company, but worthless now. Hope you're not with them, you'll get dropped if it costs them too much money. Just be prepared if you have to turn in a big claim, you'll have to pay for it one way or another. And too, if you have to turn in what they deem to many claims in a two or three year period, you'll get dropped as well. I've talked to many people it has happened to, including me!
