i want to repaint my back door with high gross latex paint. i am not quite sure what kind of paint finish was used on the door previously but it has a semi gross looking finish. How do i prepare door to except new paint?

Lightly sand it (150). Clean it (TSP). Use a primer that is acceptable for exterior use and will accept oil or latex finishes.
Apply the finish coat.

I would do it differently. First you could put a small amount of latex on the bottom and let dry, then scratch at it and see if you can scrape it off. If you can then the old coat is oil base. If it is then I would lightly sand then prime with a oil base primer then top coat it with latex. If you don't want to prime then wipe the door down with a liquid etch or liquid sandpaper. This should give a good surface to then paint. As a painter I wouldn't do this without first giving the customer the choice.
