Ask Eric Stromer a question here.My home was built in 1955..The drain pipe from the kitchen sink is leaking from a crack in the cast metal piping about five feet from where it connects to the large main drain pipe. I purchased some pcv tubing, and two stainless steel double banded hose clamps to replace the bad section of pipe with. When I went to try and cut into the old pipe with a sawsall, I couldn't put a nick in it. Given that I am on the right track hopefully, what do I cut the cast iron pipe with ??? Thank you for your time....Artie P
Eric, plumbers use a tool which looks like a bicycle chain on the end of a handle. They use it to cut the old pipe. Thjen, you can make youe patch. It should last a long time.

Get a sawzall blade carbon coated it will look like rough sandpaper on the edge of the blade. The last ones I found were Home builders, Ace hardware & True Value. This should do the trick. If you can't find a carbon coated blade the next choice is a cast iron pipe cutter. Rent one or if you have a plumber friend that you can borrow.
You can purchase a saw bit thats like a diamond bit...for cast iron.
Do not use a snap (chain) cutter unless you have experience using one, due to the condition and age of the pipe you are more likely to create major problems the pipe is probably thinned out and you will crush it. Use only a Lenox blade in a sawzall (Bi Metal blade) it will outlast any other blade and cut smoother. Hold the sawzall tight to the pipe when cutting, if you no what your doing you can do it with one blade but get extra's just in case. Then use your fernco (rubber boot with clamps) to replace section with sched 40 pvc pipe and fittings. Good Luck. 40 years plus experience. Master liscensed in MA and ME

ok.. Lowes & home Depot sell a "torch"(metal) blade from Milwakee
I HAVE HAD THESE BACK-FIRE W/ ME BEFORE THOUGH...
One sure method is a 4.5- 7" angle grinder w/ a steel cutting blade..
(just use caution w/ sparks,etc.)
It will cut (melt) through the pipe quickly & evenly making the repair easier. While the pipe is cut out it would be wise to run a snake through the drain line to remove accumulated sludge (could also have contributed to the crack)..
It is a messy task but will be helpful in adding life to your repaired drain preforming for time to come! Good luck!
