"What does it profit a man to gain the world if he loses his soul?"

You're building up a static charge.  Sometimes it's the material of our shoes, and sometimes the fabric of our clothes that causes the problem.  Walking on carpeting can help build up a big charge with the wrong shoes.  The drier the air, the easier to build up a charge.

The things you touch are grounded and the positive charge you build up sparks out of your fingers.

Dry air increases the likelihood of building up that static charge.  Dry winter air allows static to build up.  A humidifier will help.  The material in your clothing will also contribute.  When my daughter was young I went in one night because she was fussing.  In the darken room I realized she was sparking.  Her woolen footed pjs were building up a charge and shocking her.
