I have white popcorn ceilings (circa 1980). They ...

I have white popcorn ceilings (circa 1980). They look dirty and have dust/cat hair etc. clinging to them. The finish just brushes off when I try to sweep or vacuum them clean. Plus, they are now faded into an off white color and there are water spots in various places. (1) How can I clean them? (2) What do I do about the water spots? (3) Can I paint them a fresh white color, or will that cause the texture to fall off? I would like to get rid of the popcorn texture, but I think it is too costly. Any help or suggestions?

We had the same type ceilings in our living room.  When I went to paint them because of the same dinginess you speak of, I had the same problem.  It was falling off and I just made them look worse.  I ended up taking it off.   Very simple process.  I had a sprayer that had never been used.  (a garden type sprayer.)  I filled it with warm water and sprayed the ceiling a section at a time.  I then used a plastic scraper used to putty walls and the popcorn came right off.  You have to be careful that you don't gouge the walls if it gets too wet...........I was happy with the outcome.  Make sure everything is moved out or covered with plastic as this makes a big mess when the popcorn falls off the ceiling.

Diane,  thank you so much for your information on the pop corn ceiling.  I am afraid that I will have to do the same thing - at least in certain rooms like the hall way where I had an a/c water leak at one time.  My fear is the the ceiling wasn't put in plumb, but oh, well, that will have to be the way it goes.  Thank you for your help.
