There may be technical problems. I have never done this. And I think it is very likely that it would look funny.

What is the reason that you do not want to hang them from the outside?

Unfortunately by hanging drapes inside the door jam, you may hinder the door from opening and also give the appearance that the curtains are too small for the door.  A solution if possible, is to hang a curtain rod and extend it further than the width of the molding.  By extending it at least 6 inches on either side of the door molding it will allow the doors to open and close properly and give the illusion that the door is actually bigger than it is …which is great for architectural detail.

I agree with Kelly and would even consider doing the whole wall with drapes which would break up your room even less.

What should I use to remove paint from wood furniture?

  Instead of curtains, why don't you apply window tinting.  Just like they use on car windows.  I believe they sell it at Wal-Mart.  Just be careful and remove all of your air bubbles.  You can even get the tint in a mirrored finish.  You can still see outside, but noone can see in. 

I would hang the new block out sun and nosise drapes over the door jam.

How about roman shades?

Why not put material shades that pull up to top of door when not used to darken room and it appears to be a valance.  A plain material, color of doors, might not demenish size of doors n blend in w/room.
