I believe you have some of your facts wrong. Champlain was a French explorer particularly active in North America and not Central America. He founded Quebec City and opened up the northwest, calling it New France. Unlike the British, the French were not interested in settling, they rather were trappers who trapped animals for their furs. It was a lucrative trade for them. Lake Champlain in northeast New York State is named after him.
