Dr Osman Ghaleb, a pioneer Egyptian scientist of the 19 th Century: Information is requested on his life and works in Egypt and France as well as his descendents, requesting response from people who have access to relevant information, particularly family members, friends,and colleagues.
Dr Osman Ghaleb got his Doctor degree from the Sorbonne, University of Paris n 1878 in the science of Zoology, published in French in Paris. He returned to Egypt in 1880 as Professor of Natural History in the School of Medicine (Kasr el Aini), Cairo. He served until he retired around 1 October 1898. Osman Ghaleb is believed to be the first Egyptian scientist in the modern science of zoology (specialist in parasites) and his doctor thesis the first of its kind by an Egyptian scholar. He had two sons, one of them was sent to England around 1897 to complete his university studies. The name of one of his sons may be Hassan Osman Ghaleb.
After 5 years of study and research in Monpelier (France), Osman Ghaleb moved to Paris where he completed his doctor thesis in "Museum d'Histoire Naturelle". His thesis was published in 1878 in the "Archives de zoologie experimentale et generale. His professor was the celebrated naturalist Henri de Lacaze-Duthiers, professor at the Sorbonne,one time President of the Academie des Sciences of the Institut de France, Paris and founder of the marine biological stations in Roscoff and Banyuls-sur-Mer.
