Peace and Love
Where have all the hippies gone? In the 60s they were everywhere but now they are so rare, at least where I live. Where can a person still be free to be a hippie and when are we going to start another hippie revolution?
Be honest and be true to yourself.
Jeff,
I don't think we need another hippie revolution. The American society has so many problems to overcome. There was so much immorality and craziness that went on during that era, taking drugs, free love and so on. We need to concentrate and try to make our society a better one wherein everyone will try to do the right thing at the right time.
We are living pebbles cast into the pond.
We bring with us all that has shaped us...including the choices of a lifetime.
They seem to be in Vermont, mostly. It is a state with strong ideas of personal "freedom." Woodstock is there and, although, there is a mature stable community in that town, the memory of the gathering so many years ago remains. Many older hippies have stores in towns with merchandise reminiscent of the 60's and 70's. Others are living in cohousing (in many parts of the US and around the world) or in modern versions of communal living.
(Not all cohousing members are old hippies -- many simply have the dream of cooperative living and mutuality of decisionmaking. Besides, cohousing living units are considerably more expensive than homes in surrounding communities and one must have a good source of income to afford to live there. Perhaps it is a more mature vision of the hippie dream.)
Drug use is not as prevalent in the modern hippie movement as it was with the "free" 60's groups. Many have died of overdoses or AIDS from shared needles and "free" sex... Marijuana it is still a widespread problem.
To quote a well-known maxim: Freedom is not free.
In the case of hippie dreams, the idea was to get away from the restrictions of society and live without laws or rules. Throughout history there have been groups who tried this but it never succeeded. Human beings seem to need structure and accountability to help us be the best we can be and to avoid destroying each other and ourselves.
I think we have evolved beyond needing to revolt again society's norms. Some of these norms need to be changed...but from within the system and by personal example. Peace and love are never achieved by revolution that brings about more harm than good.
We are the pebbles in the pond.

jeff,
Hippies revolution was a youth revolution. The youth of that time fought for unlimeted freedom.they wanted two do what ever they want. If now young people want that kind of freedom they will do another revolution but the way of expressing thereselves will b different.Cause of time gap and mental changes.
