Helium is a non-toxic, non-flammable gas. You can read a good article at : http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Helium

or at : http://www.webelements.com/webelements/elements/text/He/key.html

Helium is used in lighter than air balloons and while heavier than hydrogen, is far safer since helium does not burn.

No, helium is not flammable. I read that helium was going to be used in the Hindenburg airship. I guess they used flammable hydrogen because it is half the weight.

how is it not flammable? when a star stops burning hydrogen it swells 30 times its original size and 10 times its luminosity, burning strictly helium. So having that said a star is a big ball of fire. so helium must be flammable

As if its flammable, it is a noble gas, meaning it has enough electrons to keep it satisfied, and it will not burn with oxygen to make Helium oxide, like most other substances.

to "make" helium do other things you have to do abnormal things, like use a proton accl. or something, space and exploding stars are VERY abnormal, im not saying that couldnt happen, im just saying on earth, in a balloon and a match you can't light helium (easily).........

hydrogen was used in the hindenburg because the u.s.a. was the sole manufacturer of helium and had a blockade on shipping to germany, while hydrogen manufacture was available, and taking place, in germany in that era.
