Your family pet is part of your family.  If you have no one, your pet is all you have and they don't argue or complain and they love you no matter what.  They are the best friends you will ever have.  They relieve the stresses that torment you and are always there for you.

Great answer.  I just want to add one thing.  You need to have a plan to survive if your pet goes to heaven before you and vice versa.  In this world, we take care of each other.  This is why preventative care is so important to our well-being and for the well-being of our pets.
