A:

When I was pregnant with my son I was 34yrs old and when they did the pregnancy diabetes test I was borderline.  My Dr. sent me to a nutritionist at our local hospital and she gave me some important information.  I could eat all the protien I wanted but I needed to watch my carbs.  If you eat to many carbs(fuel)  in one sitting your body can't break it  all down.  If your body can't break it down what remains is stored as fat instead of used as fuel.  The basic principle is to watch your carbs thru out the day.  1 unit =15mg. of carbs.  so for breakfast you can have 3 units(45mg.carbs) , for snack 2 units(30mg.), for lunch 3 units for snack 2 units, for supper 4 units(60mg.)  and for snack 2 units.  That way you spread the carbs out over the day so your body can break it down.  When I did this, I could still eat what I loved I just had to make choices about when and with what I ate it.  Want a candy bar for a snack? Find one that has no more than 2 units or 30mg. of carbs. The trick is to drink water or something that is carb free with it.  Every thing should have a label telling you what the carbs are.Plus there are a lot of foods out there that have very little or no carbs. Those are "free" foods that you can eat all day long if you want to .For breakfast I could still have toast and orange juice with my cereal, but depending on the carbs in each component of the food. It might be one slice of toast instead of two with jelly, no butter. 1/2 half a glass of OJ instead of a full glass (OJ has a lot of carbs) and 3/4 of a cup of cereal with a cup of skim milk instead of whole milk.   Say you go out to eat.  Skip the appetizer or just take a little taste.  Just eat half a buiscut  not a whole one.  Eat half your food, take the other half home for the next day or share a meal with someone you love.   Get the dessert just take it home and wait a few hours before you eat it.  If it is a really big dessert eat half and save half or share it with someone.  You can have what you want.  It is all about how much you consume at one time.   Make sure also that you stop eating at a reasonable time at night.  7:30pm.  or at the latest 8:00pm.  Do you want to lose it fast or do you want to do it the healthy way.
