Wolf, I entirely disagree with you.

Just like lack of moisture or overuse of certain products (like formaldehyde) can cause your nail to crack, split and peel, using hair products that have harmful ingredients will damage your hair. Using a hair product with a large percentage of alcohol, for instance, will dry the hair shaft and make it more prone to breakage. You are right that both hair and nails are dead cells, but these dead cells still react in certain ways to the chemicals and products that we use on them. We can experience breakage, discoloration and extreme dryness, up to the destruction of the hair itself. You are correct that in all probability none of this is going to cause baldness, but excessive usage of products with certain ingredients can harm the scalp if it comes in contact with it over a long period of time.

Conclusion - skip the hair products with alcohol.

Avoid all those cheap brands. as long as you use high quality gel there should be no problem.

You can stop worry, it's safe, let me explain why. your hair (like your fingernails) is made of dead cells, therefore your gel, or any other external use of hair products, will do no harm. The only reason for baldness (besides chemical treatment) is genetic.

I tend to agree with liron on this, but there's something else worth mentioning and that's the skin on your scalp!  Using hair spray or gel or any type of product on a regular basis has a drying effect on your scalp, even if you wash your hair regularly.  The skin needs to breath to be healthy and products tend to block pores or the chemicals cause your skin to become dry and flaky.  When your skin dries out, your body tries to replenish the lost oils by working overtime which will lead to dandriff, acne breakouts and rashes.

I'd say, stick with something like a pomade or serum, something that does not contain alcohol that can be applied to the ends of the hair without soaking into the scalp.

no . i don't think that using hair products for a long time is safe.try one thing massage your hair with hair oil[it could be amla or  sunflower etc].use excess oil to massage your hair . don't wash out the oil till the end of the day and by the time it gets dark you will experience that your mouth tastes bitter . u can try it out yourself.what ever you put on your head drips down through it .so it can not only be harmful for the hair but a lot of other things too.my neighbor  used to use cheap hair dye [hair color]and his tongue used to get black.it is even blamed to the cheap hair dye that his eye sight got weak.so i hope that you are cautious.
