There had been a lot of studies about "St. John Wort" as a relive for depression. It had been studied for quite some time now, and studies show an improvement in cases of mild depression. so it might worth a shot.

The other  widely researched natural substence is Omega 3, which also shown some result in dealing with both bi-polar and depression.

Also, depression might be effected by the lack of B vitamin and metabolical problems.

On of the main thing that you can do for depression is to do some sports on a regular bases, it effect the body and your mind in a really good way, mostly it's suggested to practice aerobic  sports, like running or spinning, but i found that Yoga works best for me.

Personally, I know a few people  who tried both Omega 3 and St. john wort, and weren't sutisfied with the result, it either helped very little and not at all. The best treatment I found to depression is SSRI medication, combined with therapy.

Here are a few home remedies for depression. I found them on http://www.homeremediesguru.com/cure/depression.aspx

    *  Take a long warm bath, add a few drops of jasmine oil to the water and lie in it for 30-40 minutes. Close your eyes and relax.
    * Drink Melissa tea when you are feeling down.
    * Drink warm chamomile tea to relax your mind and feel better.
    * Put lavender oil in a burner to make the room full of its scent, this will make you feel more uplifted.
    * Eat oatmeal daily to make you feel better.
    * Exercise daily to prevent depression.
    * Slice apples into small pieces, add 1 table tablespoon of honey and eat daily to get your mood uplifted.
    * Drink warm mint tea, take small sips and try to relax.
    * Treat depression with rosemary tea: Boil 1 cup of water, add a few rosemary leaves, stir well, and let it stand and cool for a few minutes. Then drink a cup of tea. You can also add sugar or honey to the tea to make it sweeter.
    * Eat spinach when you feel down.

My latest fad diet: the Apple-a-Day Plan!

The only thing that I can add is that people with depression can benefit from love and support.  Love and support, provided over time, are an excellent remedy.  They don't cure depression; but they do help the loved one cope.

I have experience with this, since a close member of my family has depression and anxiety.  Love and support really do help, though they're not substitutes for other remedies.

Do Not Eat, Please!

also exercise (jogging and biking especially) work phenomenally (from personal experience) apparently endorphins are a good substitute for serotonin...

...and <related>: taking long, scenic(picturesque and not with rough terrain) walks also helps
