Wine is supposed to have several healthy qualities. I have insomnia and I've been told a glass at bedtime will help. If so what kind and how much?

My latest fad diet: the Apple-a-Day Plan!

I have some information about what kind of wine may be most healthy.  According to a recent study:

"Wines richest in [condensed] tannins had the greatest protective effect on the cells and were from regions -- Sardinia and southwest France -- that use Old World winemaking techniques.

Further research showed these areas are also associated with lower heart disease rates and higher longevity, he says.

The study found that wines made from the Tannat grape in southwest France were highest in these beneficial tannins.  That grape is rarely grown elsewhere."

Although the health benefits that egblassie stated are true, there are certain times that they can be beneficial, and certain times when they will be more of a hindarence than a help.

Times close to sleep will not be helpful to aid your insomnia.
Wine releases a chemical in the brain known as melatonin, which acts as both a stimulant and relaxant to the body at various stages.

Initially the wine or alcohol will have a stimulating effect, whereafter a relaxing/sedative effect will take over.
This might all sound well and good, however after a while, this effect will wear off, causing a disruption in your sleep and essentially not helping to aid you in getting a good night's rest at all.

A good source to read up on this subject is http://sleepdisorders.about.com/cs/alcohol/a/nightcap.htm

It offers a slightly better answer than what I can offer, however the short answer is that drinking wine (or any kind of alcohol) before or close to bed time can in fact make your insomnia worse! Therefore it is not a good idea and would advise against it :-)

I have horrible insomnia, but I've found that two glasses of red wine (I weigh 190 lbs - so can absorb a lot of alcohol) and one pink Benedryl (Diphenhydramine 25 mg) tablet does wonders.  I've tried prescription sleeping pills, such as Lunesta and Ambien, but get diminishing returns each subsequent night.  Don't seem to have any noticeable withdrawal from the wine-Benedryl combo.  I wouldn't drink more than two glasses.  In that case I find that I fall asleep all right, but then wake up in the middle of the night.

Red wine such as merlot, 1 glass.  But before you try that you should start an exercise program.
