In countries where a woman can legally have an abortion there most be some "monthly" deadline . I have heard that it is legal in most countries up to the forth month ,I will also like to know how did the legislator decided on the number of months.
It depends where; in Canada for example termination is allowed until 24 weeks gestational age. This is due to the fact that the fetus is viable (can theoretically survive outside the uterus) only after this time. Applying for termination after 24 weeks is futile.
In Israel it takes a special committee to approve termination of pregnancy after 24 weeks – but it is possible.

Medically, the earlier the abortion, the easier it is. A late abortion is an actual birth.
My guess is that the mother's health was part of the issue, obviously in addition to ethical reasons and the viability that Dr. Shrim mentioned.
