I drink too much alcohol because I am home alone all day with nothing to do. I am retired disabled. I find it hard to leave my house because I have very bad anxiety, another reason I drink. Do you have any suggestions on what I could do to stop drinking so much. I am going to AA

Be honest and be true to yourself.

Scrooge,

If yout statement about the cause of your alcoholism is true, then the U.S.

must have so many alcholics by now.  For your anxiety, do you have any prescription drug?  If not, it's time to see your doctor.

It seems to me that boredom is the main reason you drink, have you considered getting a hobby. By all means, I don't mean any disrespect, but with what you spend on alcohol, you can afford virtually any form of hobbies. I'm not a doctor, but I can speculate that your anxiety could be caused by your alcohol dependancy.

Turn off the television and teach your children how to think.

Find something to occupy your hands, preferably both hands at once. Knitting or crocheting comes to mind.

If that doesn't work due to your disability, what about jigsaw puzzles, crossword puzzles, playing chess or scrabble against other online opponents or even something simple, such as reading?

You might also consider getting a small indoor pet, such as a kitten or a parakeet. Neither will require your leaving the house, and you will find that either provides a lot of entertainment and a means of distraction for you other than drinking.

Meanwhile, you are retired and disabled. You're not dead. Stop making excuses for why you drink and take ownership of your actions.

Good luck with the A.A.; keep it up!

Don't just rock the boat, turn it over, if you're not on it!

Get a hobby. Try workworking, painting, writing, or your computer. Work around your disablity. Go see your doctor about your drinking and anxiety. Get a check up. You may have a underlaying problem for the anxiety. Have your friends over for coffee, cards or watch TV together. But leave the booze out of the picture. No one wants to be around a drunk. But I have to admire you for going to AA. It tells me your trying to help yourself. May God Be with you.
