A man who carries a cat by the tail learns something he can learn in no other way

Mark Twain

Which is your most hated internet word?

When Lewis Carroll invented the term "uglify"* it didn't make the Oxford English Dictionary. Internet terms on the other hand become more and more acceptable as English words.

Which is your most hated internet word?

* Lewis Carroll, Alice's Adventures in Wonderland

`I couldn't afford to learn it.' said the Mock Turtle with a sigh. `I only took the regular course.'

`What was that?' inquired Alice.
`Reeling and Writhing, of course, to begin with,' the Mock
Turtle replied; `and then the different branches of Arithmetic--
Ambition, Distraction, Uglification, and Derision.'
`I never heard of "Uglification,"' Alice ventured to say.  `What is it?'
The Gryphon lifted up both its paws in surprise.  `What!  Never
heard of uglifying!' it exclaimed.  `You know what to beautify is,
I suppose?'
'Yes,' said Alice doubtfully:

`it means--to--make--anything--prettier.'
`Well, then,' the Gryphon went on, `if you don't know what to
uglify is, you ARE a simpleton.'

I hate the verb "to google" and I do my best not to use it. I also dislike "emoticons", but not to the same extent, and I don't refrain from using it when I have to.

First of all, let me make it clear: I use emoticons in online activities, but I try to refrain from using the actual word "emoticon". I use "smiley" or "smilies" if I can. I know that it doesn't have the exact same meaning, and I know that some emoticons actually frown and not smile, but I still prefer this term.

Since I hardly ever use emoticons to convey negative messages (anger, disapproval, headache etc.), and most of the time I use them to convey smiles, laughter, approval or satisfaction, and since I use emoticons that do smile, it works for me.

Also, since most of my online activity is in Hebrew (IM, emails), and since I have a feeling that the word "emoticons" is less common in Hebrew that in English (although it is being used in a transcription to Hebrew letter, and the same goes for "smilies", "email" and other internet-related terms), I don't think that my disliking the word has a great effect on my online interactions.

Funny - I don't mine the word, but I do mind the use of smilies and little drawings to convey feelings. This is my most hated internet "word" I also really dislike LOL for the same reason - I don't like the way the internet tales away people's need to find the right words to convey their feelings and thoughts. If I'm talking to a friend and they are happy or sad, I much rather them write to me "I'm really sad about something" then use a silly face - it makes every feeling look superficial and stupid.

Also - as far as LOL goes, it's just a passive aggressive way to talk honestly while trying not to face the reprocution of honesty (as in "yes, you did look really fat in that dress....LOL").

I like to use emoticons (but I'll refrain when answering you of course). I guess when people use LOL when they are really embarrassed, are those who giggle in inappropriate moments...
