What happens when both parties are served with papers.

I filed papers for child custody on 9/4/09 and my sons father filed papers on 9/11/09 for child custody. What happens when both parties are served with papers. I sent the papers for him to be served on 9/11/09 and Idk when he sent his papers out, but I just got them today 9/17/09. Also when filing for temporary custody does a judge have to grant it and sign the paper?
