What happened to the United States of America

What happened to the United States of America?

We were a proud, independent, respected, entrepreneurial country....what happened? How did it happen?

Please don't give me any biblical replies. I'm a Christian & believe in God. This is not the place or forum for theological discussions.

Central to our republic is the rule of law.   We had a defect ( We are human after all.)  in our beginnings, the issue of slavery.   It is not treated with the empiricism that is needed for an understanding that the question of the negro would always be a problem as their treatment contradicted our credos.  The same legal and social kinds of struggles showed themselves in the assimilation of millions of foreigners.  There was a book, entitled, I think, "How the Irish became White."  I am sorry that I don't remember the author.  However it points out the learning of how to be in the body politic and social hierarchy in America.   It also shows, by default, that people forget and push for more, with a new sense of entitlement, not opportunity.  You can see this is the union movement.  Listen to union people today.  They are rarely to be depended upon for anything as a group.  The notion of what some called Dixie crats, and also Reagan Democrats is an example that race and supposed class will trump old political alliances.  Although you don't want a religious answer, one of the great examples of what I am speaking about is the current status of power that the Republican party has.  It came with the switch of Dixie crats to that party because of voting rights for blacks.   Jimmie Carter was the only President, who as a Christian Believer attended Sunday School, but he was abandoned for political reasons, by the so called Christian Right.  During all of this time new found wealth in stock market speculation was going on, so you had the "greed is good" group.   What has happened with all of these examples is a concentration of power that has been unprecedented in our history.  Absolute power, corrupts absolutely.   It has happened all over the world in different cultures.  we have blindly figured that with our creed it could not happen here.   The balance is gone.   The current group did not bring it to past, they simply took it to extremes that has destroyed our body politic, stolen elections, defied the rule of law.  The back drop of all of this is September 11, 2001.   Also in the background was always the specter of oil.  ( For some entertainment, imitating life, or vice versa, get a copy of 3 Days of Condor.  This movie asks a very relevant question about us and our government.  It is frighteningly current, even moreso today.)

What generall happened in the history of our republic there came some reformer, some bright, or at least different light, to challenge the impending status quo.   I see little to suggest we have that light available to us today.  Our stature world wide is kaput.  Our relations in America are as fractured as they ever have been, and those whose ethics should lead them to protest have sold their souls to the Devil, seeking only to keep gays from getting married; preventing women from having abortions, and being sure there is no affirmative action.  Other than that, the so called Christian right and other supposedly ethically based groups are mute and silent about the treatment of our republic and law.  People have actually said that they would not mind giving up some rights to fight terrorists.   don't worry, they are already gone!

WOW...Great question. I don't have the answers. Thank you for asking that question. Maybe if more people stopped to look at what we are giving up ...our pride little by little. When did it become fashionable to be ashamed of being an American? I hear people talk about freedom of speech but today that is just words..no pun. Where did that freedom go? I'm not giving any answers just asking more questions. My great grandparents where very proud to be in America and my grandparents were proud to be American. They had to work and fight (ww1 ww2) to have that privilege. Maybe that is where we have lost pride. No one wants to work for anything anymore. I'm 35 years old-if this is what it is like now, what will my children have to be proud of or will they go with the flow and allow this to keep taking pieces of what it means to be an American. I'm sorry I can't begin to get my mind around an answer to what you asked. But, thank you for planting the seed of thought it has to begin somewhere or this generation will have managed to destroy all the people before us fought so hard to build.

Be Blessed.

Though I speak with the tongues of men and of angels, and have not charity (Love), I am become as a sounding brass, or a tinkling cymbal.

Charity suffereth long, and is kind; charity envieth not; charity vauneth not itself, is not puffed up, Doth not behave itself unseemly, seekth not her own, is not easily provoked, thinketh no evil; Rejoiceth not in iniquity, but rejoiceth in truth; Beareth all things, believeth all things, hopeth all things, endureth all things. Charity never faileth.

And now abideth faith, hope, charity, these three; but the greatest of these is (Love) charity.

I believe it started with the Bush Administration. We stopped being transparent and letting the people have a say. We let George Bush get away with his "It's my way or the highway" philosophy. We stopped talking to our allies in other countries and didn't need anyone's help. We became so arrogant in our dealings that nations all around the world hates us. We never had that trouble with other Presidents. We need to get back on track, we need to work with other nations around the world. We the people need to get back involved in our government. We need a leader that will bring back the respect and credibility that we have lost. Believe it or not, other nations are watching us. They watch us closely. They watch our government and the shady deals that take place in Washington. They watch how we treat one another. They watch how much we have progressed as a nation when it comes to fairness in politics, racial issues and domestic affairs. We are constantly under the spot light. They are watching this election closer than ever to see if our prejudices as a nation will prevent a black man from becoming the first black president of the United States.

Tippy, go back MUCH farther than that....try Lyndon Barnes Johnson.

40+ years later his Great Society has proven a dismal failure and yet, we keep funding it.

It is obvious you're a democrat, but look at history and the history of our economy and you'll see it all converge around LBJ.

The road to nowhere is paved with good 'intentions'.

Hi Fredst.  I have been following some of your answers, and questions, you are a very smart and informed man, I've learned things from you. Thanks!  But here,  I must quote back to you what you said as a plain, self-explanatory answer to your own question. (What happend to the United States of America)?

Then you said; "Please don't give me any Biblical replies. I'm a Christian & believe in God. This is not the place or forum for theological discussions."

I think that's been said a few too many times in America.. In this Country founded on Biblical Principals.. right?  Yet we continually say, "Let's keep God out of it." Even if in our hearts. Well, He's obviously out of it.  With all do respect, it seems to me that you have asked and answered your own question.
