The name, Halloween comes from All Hallows Eve, which is also known as All Saints, or All Souls. THe Old English meaning of the word Hallow is "sanctify", so you get the notion it has to do with holly stuff (and my guess is that it is no coincidence the words are so similar).
The Romans observed this day at the end of the Roman year (February 1st). In the 7th century Pope Boniface replaced a pagan festival with this day and moved it to May, and later it was transferred to November 1st, as we celebrate it today.
The origins of the festival go back to the Celtic tribes, probably as early as the 5th century BC, if not even earlier. It was actually one of the four major holidays celebrated to mark the seasons of the year, in November commemorating fall.

The book traces the history of The celebration of October 31 from Samhain, the year cycle rite observed by the pagan Celts in Britain, to the many ways it is marked in North America at the time of the new millennium. The central thesis, supported by myriad examples and illustrations, is that Halloween has always been a liminal time, a boundary between autumn and winter, this world and the other world, life and death.
