Actually, as a pro, we only use professional dye's that require a license to buy.  I have witnessed salons using clairol at their salons too.  Not a fan of clairol because it fades too fast, however it would be best used by an amateur due to its weaker potency. I also would advise you to go a shade lighter then you are looking to achieve.  (weaker doesn't mean lighter; it just won't hold the color as long) Last thing; do not leave on longer then box says. Yes, you will get darker hair, but you will also process your hair too much and it will leave you with a ton of dead ends and very dry hair. Clairol tends to turn out a shade darker then the box says, hence my saying...go a shade lighter.

Good Luck

social butterfly,

I,do color at home now I,have used hydrience by clairol that seems to fade less also turns out exact shade but I,heard it is not safe how would you if you can rate

garnier nutrisse and loreal preference and excellence?

I,will be turning 48 later this year so I,am looking for great cover no fade

I,used preference golden blonde turned out ok kind of reddish which I,tend to pick up but faded, some what and roots are through in 3 weeks this never happened with that, so I,am unsure which brand is best.

I would stick with the clairol, but follow instructions to a T.  As long as you aren't using reds and other vibrant colors, it should stay in the normal 4 weeks.  When you re-color, always do the roots first or you will have an uneven color tone eventually.  Using a heavy conditioner will also help to hold in the hair color through out the month.  If you can not find one, then use color safe shampoo and conditioner.  I personally would rate clairol an 8, loreal preference and excellence a 7.  Garnier hair dyes have not been on the market long enough to truly judge yet.  As far as the clairol hydrience, I have never heard of it not being safe.  The only way it wouldn't be safe is if you left it in too long. The deeper conditioner in it also gives for better and more natural looking color for sure.  Just be sure to get monthly trims of 1/4", and you should not have any problems. All dyes including professional ones give dead ends, thus, the importance of having the trims.

good luck tigress & feel free to ask anything else you might think of:)

I doubt a salon professional would recommend any at-home, off the shelf treatment. They may suggest something more advanced you might be able to get from Sally's or a local beauty supply store, but there is a significant difference between consumer hair color and professional hair color. If you are looking for an inexpensive hair color treatment, try a beauty school with supervised services or check with local salons who might need models for education classes or new staff training sessions. If you get your hair color at W-mart, you'll likely look like you got your hair color at W-mart.
