What the guy means, or how it sounds like, if he uses "could" in this conversation?
well it means that he could if he wanted to, but he doesnt want to marry you.
Turn off the television and teach your children how to think.

It means, "Not now!" It probably also means, "And I hope you don't ask me this question again anytime soon."
Sounds like that to me too, but if that's the way he feels then that's the way it is.
