Matteo, the best thing you can do for your friend is to be there. You don't have to buy anything, just your presence will often help your friend get through this very difficult time. I recommend reading Helping Friends Who Are Mourning a Loss as you will find it quite helpful in understanding how and what your friend is feeling and what you can do for him/her.
