The revolution hasn't started but the movement is taking shape.  However, there are many "alternatives" that simply aren't what they are cracked up to be.  Check out Consumer Report's report on Ethanol as a gas replacement: <a href="http://www.consumerreports.org/cro/cars/new-cars/ethanol-10-06/overview/1006_ethanol_ov1_1.htm">here</a> for some info about that.  There are ways to go green, or at least in that direction, but it costs more than going in the direction that we are going in.  That is the real problem.
