How does a graphics card recognize a tv

How does a pc graphics card knows that a tv is connected at the other end of the output s-video cable? I'm trying to connect my laptop to a TV using the output s-video plugin. The graphics card is supposed to know somehow that there is a TV plugeed in at the other end. I am wondering, if the s-video output plug only transmits information, how can the graphics card know if the tv is connected? is there a back signal of some sort?

The signal is always there if the port is active. So in your case if you activate the S-Video port then the signal will be at that por, and as soon as you plug it in to your TV it will be transmitted to the TV. If you dont activate the port, or tell your computer you want to use it, then it will not transmit the signal through that port.
