For the first year since 1975, Social Security checks will remain flat. Social Security benefits are keyed to inflation. So what happens when year-over-year inflation becomes negative? No cost-of-living adjustment (COLA) occurs to increase your Social Security income. For more details see this article.

 

Because there was no cost of living increase your check amount will remain the same. There are a couple of exemptions to this rule. Go to the SSi web site and type 2010 benefit changes in questions box.
