If you are moving into subsidized housing that is a single family house it is understandable that the owner may not another one ready to show you. But if it is an apt there is no reason why you can't be shown a similiar unit.
In the 31 yrs I managed subsidized and Public Housing I never saw one that wasn't nice because it is a HUD requirement that all housing MUST be safe, sanitary and decent. All repairs MUST be made prior to your moving in one. Do not take the leasing agent's word that repairs can be made as you move in. What Rebecca Young told you is totally wrong. Never move in any rental unit that isn't clean. Furthermore her assumption that you are moving in such housing is because of your economic status is none of her business. If there is anything about the place you don't like then don't move in it. They should walk the unit with you at move in or move out. That protects you in the long run. More importantly, you never have to clean up behind someone else no matter what you can afford.
