Your problem is a very simple one.  You need to shower with him, scrub his body with a sponge or a washcloth, clean him very well, fool around in the shower and if you keep doing this, he'll be encouraged to shower all the time with you, which also is very good in establishing more bonding between couples. 

    When you both get out of the shower, you are 100% sure he is very clean.  He will eventually get the idea that you want him smelling good and clean before he gets in bed with you.

Seeing as it was your "former" situation, I don't think showering with him is an option anymore, although dogbreeder's suggestion is awesome (and fun), 2 thumbs up for the suggestion.  I'm a greasy, dirty, truck driver and when I get home I don't use a sponge or wash-cloth either, considering that my body is covered in hair (gross, I know) I actually feel cleaner when I get out of the shower if I use a liquid bodywash and scrub like hell with my own fingertips (just like shampooing.)
