I use Legacy, an inexpensive, versatile and robust program. I have used it for almost five years now, through several upgrade levels. You can download it here:

http://www.legacyfamilytree.com

and use it for as long as you like. The most advanced features won't work until you pay for the full product (it's about $30 or so, not very expensive), but if you are just starting out you may not need the advanced features for some time.

Legacy lets you have almost an unlimited number of records, manage most modern relationships, and produce a wide variety of reports. I think you'll like it, whether you are an experienced genealogist or just starting out.

Good luck!

The best software I have found is phpgedview

http://www.phpgedview.net/ It is free and open source. It must be hosted on a website so you either need access to a webserver or there are many hosting companies that will host for a small annual fee. For a Free 30 day trial try our-kin.net

No day in which you learn something is a complete loss.

Apparently

Geni (a web based family tree builder and social network) is gaining A LOT of traction among users. Supposedly it has good genealogy functionality. According to some rumors its up for sale for 100 million dollars.
