why do gas stations use the gimmick of selling gas at $3.799/gallon?  why don't they be upfront and charge 3.80/per gallon?

As I'm quite sure you know, the psychology of stupidity assumes that avoiding whole numbers fools people into feeling like the gas is somehow less expensive even though  a 20 gallon fill-up yields all of 2 cents in savings.
