Why are gas prices so high?

For my 18th birthday I plan on getting a car. Looking at gas prices recently, I dont know if I can afford it! Are gas prices going to go down any time soon? Why are they so high right now?

The less that you give you're a taker

Ok Pixie, supply and demand is key here. The Chinese are ramping up their oil usage even faster than we did 20 years ago, so those who own the oil will only charge more because there's less of it now and the Chinese need so much now. The thing is, the price per barrel has to be equal for everyone under the EU accords. If you had less of something than you used to, wouldn't you charge more for it too? Gas will only get more expensive, so get a good mileage car!

The road to nowhere is paved with good 'intentions'.

Well, along time ago someone decided to put oil.......gasoline onto the stock market.  This isn't a product like Coca-Cola or Pepsi.  We can't simply make more of it when we want it.  Eventually, it is going to run out.  Because everyone knows this and is scared about it, they decide to make the prices of it high in order to compensate for its growing shortage.
