Sounds like corn smut.  Once you've got it there isn't much you can do except remove the infected plants and hope it doesn't spread.  It is caused by a fungus, so do the culling midday when everything is warm and dry, and wash your hands before you handle your healthy plants.  The best way to avoid getting it again next year is to practice crop rotation; don't plant your corn in the same spot year after year.
