The leaves of my cabbages and purple sprouting ...

The leaves of my cabbages and purple sprouting broccalli are gradually going yellowy brown and curling and wilting. Can you tell me what this is and how to deal with it? Thanks. Tim from Ireland

70 thumbs up

Cabbage is a cool season crop, and thrives in cooler temperatures. Hot and humid conditions will cause cabbage to rot. It is actually, one of the earliest crops that can be planted in the spring, but not too early. Cabbage plants will survive a hard frost but not a freeze. Several days or nights of colder temperatures will cause cabbage plants to produce an elongated terminal stem, a condition known as bolting that eventually produces a seed head.

Do unto others, as you would have them do unto youCool

Since Broccoli is a member of the Cabbage family, your question may be answered with one suggestion. But first I need to know, did the plant rot or die off? If this is the case, perhaps you should check your soil. In Wisconsin, the yellows is very common there. It is caused by a soil fungus (a species of fusarium), the common form in Wisconsin. The reccomendation is to plant in another spot or grow varieties marked "yellows-resistant" from where you purchase your seeds.

I hope this is somewhat helpful to your problem.

Mini Garden in October

It turned out that I just got into gardening all within the past 3 weeks and I had wasted my entire summer!! Anyways, so this is my mini garden in October. I live in the city with a 'yard' enclosure. So I have the following plants: Tomatoes, Bell Peppers, Lentil Plants, 'Banana' plant, Strawberries, Cilantro, Basil, Thyme, Mint, Green Onions, Honey Dew etc. (No chili pepper plants) The lentil plants were started by sprouting and then planted in soil. (Just wanted to see what they would turn into.) Basil cuttings are from the herb basket. The herbs in the basket I did not start from seeds and were already harvested once. I water the plants with fish water from my mini aquaponic system. It is now Fall with temperatures in the 70s and nights being slightly colder. However there is no snow here.
