If you are not opposed to using herbicides there are formulations that target dandelions but not grass.  They are quite effective and usually show results in 24 hours.

If you want to avoid chemicals you need to attack the dandelions by pulling them up by the roots.  There are garden tools that make this easier.  You must get the entire plant, especially the roots.  Try to get the plant before the flower goes to seed.

Did you know that dandelions are a medicinal herb?  You can eat them, make tea with them.  As soon as you start doing something productive with them and want them in your garden, they will go away all on their own.

Lol...I see your question was posted a very long time ago, but I just thought I'd let you know this.  Dandellions are herbs, and the leaves are edible, and great in a salad.  They also contain potassium.

I buy the half gallon of ORTHO WEED KILLER. I measure carefully and mix it with water in a small squirt bottle container. I can walk around my yard and hit all the weeds that I want to get rid of. It also kills many types of grasses.

Most of us think of the Dandelion as being an invasive weed, but the Dandelion is actually a vitamin rich herb. Throughout history, the dandelion has been used as a cure all. It is rich in calcium, iron, magnesium, and essential B vitamins. Therefore, if you want to improve your health and well-being you should add dandelion to your diet. Here are some tips on how to harvest and prepare dandelion greens.

Now granted this is not what you had in mind when you asked this question.  If you are not into being healthier, then I would place an ad in the paper letting health enthusiasts know that you have a large crop of dandelions and that they are free, encourage them to come out and remove them.  Many people prepare dandelion root coffee too so you may get a response.  This means no effort on your part to get rid of the dandelions.
