What nutrients do i put on virgin soil to grow vegetables and when do i add the nutrients to the soil?
Add compost, grass clippings, chopped leaves to the garden and let these decompose over the winter. Organic material is the best additive for any soil. Micro organisms in the soil will 'eat' the material and make nutrients available. Deep dig at least 12" before planting - root crops especially need room to grow deep. Adding 4" of organic material will give you a great start. Have fun.

You can add your lime now and work it in the soil at the same time you do your leaves and grass clippings and it will all be decayed by Spring. In the Spring when you are getting ready to plant, add a little more lime, and till it in the soil good and plant. I found out years ago that lime just makes things grow larger and with more flavor . Tomatoes just taste like I remember them from when I was small. Delicious. Try it, I bet you will like the difference. Good luck with your harvest in 2010. t OU asteing

Hi monsoon,
The way I understand virgin soil is still a land not planted yet to any crops (e.g. forest land or second growth forest). I don't know if this is the one you're talking about.
However, to clear your mind, let me suggest this way: If one of your soil is still virgin land, then you don't need any soil amendments. Virgin soils are very rich in organic matter sufficient enough to supply food nutrients to your crops.
But, if what you mean virgin soil as depleted soils, then you need to amend your soil by putting some additional compost to enrich the soil. Or if you've available grass clippings, waste garbage, or kitchen waste, you should put up your compost bin to have an available ready made compost for the succeeding cropping season.
Happy gardening!

The suggestions are really good - I would put there a compost made of what you have organic in the kitchen = egg shels, pieces of vegetables, fruits etc. I am sure that your soil will get better.
Yes, you just put virgin soil. I guess that's simply the way thing go

13-13-13 Fertalizer/Lots of Lime fine Granuals and 1" of Peat. Till that all in ,in the spring. After season is over in the fall repeat and let soil rest.I cover my gardin spot with 6 mill black plastic to reduce weed's for winter.
PS. Dont put Grass cuttings , Hay,or cow manure in it or you will be weeding for ever !!!

If the soil is hard clay then you need to add peat that comes in a bale not a bag and dig it in well or till. If the soil is easy to dig in- add the same peat, one bag sand-small, and compost(in a bag at any garden store), . Compost is often cow manure and will smell- just so you know.
