The letters, "CCCP" show up here and there even now. It is universally hated, along with the leftist doctrine that made the Soviet Union the atrocity that it was since the days of the sadistic Bolsheviks. How little an abject evil changes over time!
The Union of Soviet Socialist Republics set a new low in treachery, bias, and single-minded political atrocity worldwide. Their "Agents Provocateur" stationed in America caused as much hatred, bitterness, and dissension as they could for one specific cause only: a military overthrow of the United States, the enslavement of our people, and world domination.
We can thank the Soviets for the influx of LSD, methedrine labs, and the Generation Gap that put teenagers to the point of murdering their parents. Many did so, thinking that they did their, "Rightist lackey parents a favor by ending their totalitarian beliefs in democracy . . .."
Anyone who doubted their ruthless ambition would have changed their mind instantly on one visit to Afghanistan between 1976 and 1988, when the Soviets left in cowardly, disorganized rout before victorious Afghan Mujahideen. We supplied them scant little more than tactical advice and Stinger missiles. They did the impossible against an atheist empire.
We are still cleaning up landmines from that hellish time. Many were poured out of Hind-III gunships on Mosques and schools to prevent people from going to either. These mines were made to maim children as their usual means to subdue a conquered people.
So, the function of socialism has not changed.

It appears that like most American rightwingers you are ill informed about what socialism actually is and is not so allow me to properly educate you on the matter.
Socialism is a system that advocates the vesting of the ownership and control of the means of production and distribution, of capital, land, etc., in the community as a whole.
Countries such as Portugal and France both have strong Socialist leaning in their governments do not fit into your above diatribe.
The Portuguese parliament for example is dominated by two political parties, the Socialist Party and the Social Democratic Party.
Socialism is in itself too idealistic to function as intended due to man's tendency towards personal greed and so a hybrid of democracy and socialism functions with much better results than pure socialism.
It is also arguable that other countries such as Canada and Great Britain have socialist characteristics and also do not fit your theories either. There are other examples as well but having already refuted your claims I'll just end here.
Funny how those who fear "socialism" argue variious attributes of what "socialism" is without giving a concise definition of the true meaning of "socialism". Like anything else, there can NOT exist any PURE form of any political philosophy. Thus, no pure form of socialism exists in the world. Also, no pure form of democracy exists...not even in the U.S.!
In a pure socialist state, all functions of the state are designed to benefit the "commons". That is, benefits are evenly distributed to all citizens of the state. But the question begged to be answered is this: WHO determines the fair distribution of benefits? WHO is in control? In a pure socialist state, no individual has any more or less authority than anyone else. It is a cooperative (ironic how that term is now being bantered around by rightwingers arguing against healthcare reform these days because they fear "socialist medicine") arrangement among the citizenry so that everyone receives an equal share of society's benefits.
Also, a pure democracy is nothing short of mob rule. When all decisions are left entirely to the "majority", the minority is repressed and oppressed by the majority. Tyrany by the majority is a natural result of the desire to maintain their majority status, and, thus, power. This results in chaos and quickly dissolves the society into some form of monarchy or empirical ruling class.
And when you place capitalism into the mix, no matter which form of government is organized, unfettered capitalism (without regulation by a strong, centralized government) results into the kind of society developed in the late 19th century where robber barons ruled the financial system. Wealth is created and hoarded by a tiny group of powerful individuals and the vast majority of the citizenry is oppressed into poverty (think of any classic Dickens novel).
Socialism combined with democracy seems to present a good balance politically and economically. Regulating capitalism within the framework of a democratically elected government, which is dedicated to the welfare of all its citizenry (absent the dominance of the monied class), creates a very high standard of living for everyone. And, ambitious, creative individuals can pursue wealth without being hindered in that pursuit by government overregulation and taxation.
In America, we ALREADY have many aspects of SOCIALISM in our representative democracy: police/fire protection, roads/bridges freely open to the public, public utilities, public parks, militia/military protections, Social Security/Medicare/medicaid, and the list grows larger. The benefit of all these services is shared by US ALL! That, my friend, is socialism and I'm sure YOU wouldn't want to sacrifice any of it in order to form a pure democracy, would you?
So, get over you obsession with this abstract thing you call "socialism". You already live with it, and appreciate it! We are in no danger of slipping into a pure socialist state and to think otherwise is simply being neurotic and hyperalarmist.

Ha, HA, HA, HAAA!!! Are you against public schools (do you believe only the ultra-rich deserve education), law enforcement (the wealthy have private armys where they don't), the Postal Service, etc. You don't know what socialism is. You also don't know the definitions of liberal (even after 8 years of the most liberal administration in US history) or conservative. In fact, you don't even know your history. Don't embarrass yourself anymore...I'm embarrassed for you.
Leftist radicals (signing in under three screen names) all harassed me with the same predictable leftist brainwashing, lies, and hatred. Such insane bias proves why leftists have so much trouble earning more than below-minimum-wage salaries, usually as unpaid volunteers, living on welfare.
Is that the sort of life you leftists idolize? Is that what you want others to suffer just because cantankerous leftists are lazy, deceived, and deceptive? Will manipulative and bitter leftists always play the same discredited games until they die in rags?
The answer, sadly, is yes.
Such is the venom that leftists all believe, but as leftists are resigned to lives of abject misery, they can console themselves on their lonely deathbeds with the knowledge that they could have had sweet and productive lives, had they merely shown the sense to do what is morally and ethically right. And they can console themselves with the knowledge that these prima donnas dragged others down to living in the gutter with them.
No rational person buys the games of leftists.
That is why they are best forgotten, which will happen anyway.
