My friend stole a rental car in my name and wont give it back

i rented a car for my best friend for a few days.  she told me she returned the car and its been a few months.  avis came to my house to get the car cause it wasnt paid for.  my friend went to talk to them and she told them that she doesnt have the car and im crazy and im a drug addict.  i dont understand any of this but she insists she doesnt have the car.  i went the next day and i also talked to the police and i told them the truth that i had rented it for her.  i come to find out that my so called best friend has a felony record for stealing over 50 grand from a group home and that she has pulled a similar scam before at the same car rental.  does anyone have any advice?  will i have to do jail time?  will she get away with this?  what do i have to do to stop her?  she sent text threats that she would contact DYFS and say stuff about my kids.  the police believed me and they said she was a con artists.  anybody please help.  is this a criminal act on my part or is this just civil for the worth of the car?  im hoping she parked the car in a nice spot so it could be found but ive been hearing that she has taken bats to cars and im scraed for my family too.

THAT WHICH DOESN'T KILL YOU MAKES YOU STRONGER.

Bull. Reality is, it will usually hurt like hell and leave you with a permanent limp.

Well, no matter what, YOU are liable for the car -  you rented it and (in violation of the rental agreement) gave it to a third party , so , it's your baby.  I feel sure if you pay for the car, the rental company will not file charges.  As for the friend;  first, settle with the company about the car - then go to your County or City D.A. and explain what happened, and what she has done since then  -  take any documentation and proofs with you.  Try to file a stolen vehicle report (since it's going to be your car now) and let the cops take it from there.   Document any threats made (record any telephone calls) and immediately give them to the cops to follow through on.

Conservation: Paying more and getting less.

No good deed goes unpunished. I hope you bought the insurance. In the future be more discriminate in your choice of friends. Sounds like the cops are on your side.

i had just went on general assistance because i am completely broke and i have both physical and mental illnesses.  im not crazy, im just bi-polar.  now that im starting menopaus my bi-polar has gotta worse.  so there is no money on my end to pay for a $20,000.00 car.

no i didnt get the insurance.  as for my choice of friends.  she has been my best friend for 9 years.  i trusted her with my life.  i dont think that anyone could have seen this one coming.  she did everything for me and in 9 years we only had 2 fights.  im blown away because i considered myself very lucky to have a friend as good as her.
