What seems to be the natural food source there at the moment? Worms if you have water runoff washing stuff into the water. Tadpoles and small frogs after they start getting active. Spring here just started, so I would go with worms or minnows because that's what available to them already. Your results may vary. This is only one BSer's opinion.
I have always found that a plastic (rubber worm) worked slowly around cover was the best spring bait. Personally, I like the worms that are pumpkin seed in color, but I suspect that any darkish color will produce.

I use bee moths (wax worms), 2 on a "Crappie" hook from Eagle Claw on a spring bobber set at 28 -32 inches. Throw it out and reel it back in, the bee moths have a twirlling things going on when reeled in that the bass go crazy for.
